Then we must use the ‘rhema’ or faith-producing words, (that is the specific verses of Scripture) that God has quickened to us and made applicable to our particular situation. So this means that when we fight against the attacks of Satan, we must first of all be clothed in the armour of God (as found in the ‘logos’ or totality of Scripture). In Ephesians 6:17 we find that the Sword of the Spirit is the ‘rhema’ word of God. As the Scripture says, “Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame.” For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Jesus said, “man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word (‘rhema’) of God” (Matthew 4:4) And Paul wrote in Romans 10:17, “Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word (‘rhema’) of Christ.”Īgain we get the idea in Romans 10:8-11, ‘But what does it (the Scripture) say? “The word (‘ rhema’ ) is near you it is in your mouth and in your heart,” that is, the word (‘ rhema’) of faith we are proclaiming: that if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Then the Gospels and Epistles are preaching the message of Jesus Christ, crucified, resurrected, and ascended on high so that men and women around the world will accept Him as Lord and be ready for Him to return as King.īut when it comes to you and I responding to the message of Salvation and then taking and using the Word of God in our lives, we need a ‘rhema’ to instil the faith required by the ‘logos’. All the Law and the Prophets were preparing the stage for Jesus to come the first time as suffering servant and redeeming Saviour. The Old Testament is promising that Jesus will come and the New Testament is proclaiming that Jesus has come and will come again. From Genesis to Revelation, Jesus is the central character and personality. The whole Bible is understood properly only as we interpret it in the light of Jesus Christ. You can also take 1 Corinthians 13 and put the name of Jesus where the word ‘love’ is and again it will make that passage of Scripture come alive for you. In fact the message of Proverbs will come alive to you if you do that.

You can take a passage like Proverbs 2 and replace the words, ‘wisdom’, ‘insight’ and ‘instruction’, with the name ‘Jesus’ and you will get the same message. (John 1:1) Jesus embodied the total ‘wisdom’, ‘insight’ and ‘instruction’ of God in His life, His words, and His actions. Jesus Christ is the ‘logos’ of God in person. In regards to the Bible, logos is the Bible in its entirety rhema is a specific verse from the Bible’ (to you personally). As Jack Hayford writes, ‘Logos is the message rhema is the communication of the message. Logos is the general word of God for everyone, whereas Rhema is the specific and personal word of God for an individual. But we need to see the difference in the way they are used so that we can understand and respond correctly to what God is saying and doing. There are two Greek words in the Bible, ‘logos’ and ‘rhema’, and both are translated in English as ‘word’.
